Odessa Archaeological Museum, one of the oldest in the country, was founded in 1825. Its development was promoted in 1839 Odessa Society of History and Antiquities, which had the right to carry out excavations in southern Russia.

Of the 50 thousand coins deposited in the museum exhibits on display the most rare of gold and silver, produced in ancient Greece, Rome and Byzantium. Collection of Egyptian antiquities - the third largest in the former Soviet Union. Here interest is wooden and stone sarcophagi, grave goods, stone slabs and fragments of papyrus with hieroglyphics.
