Schönbrunn Palace

His story begins in 1559, when Maximilian II bought a plot of land on which the mill was "Kattenburg", on his orders changed into a hunting lodge. "Schoenbrunn" - "excellent source", so named Matthias Kaiser. Kaiser was crowned in 1612, and reportedly chronicles the early days of his reign, he went to hunt and discovered the source of the purest water - "Schönbrunn". The hunting lodge was destroyed during the Turkish siege in 1683. In 1692 Emperor Leopold I decided to build for his son Joseph's summer residence, and received the task to his favorite architect Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, one of the most famous architects of the Baroque period, who made a significant contribution to the formation of the image of Vienna.

Fischer von Erlach has developed an ambitious project, set out to surpass Versailles. He wanted to build a palace on the hill, thus underlining the exceptional position of the monarch. From the palace had to go down stairs with ramps. Because of financial difficulties, this project has not been realized. Instead of ceremonial gatherings of a park, which is the completion of the palace - the Kaiser still had to get closer to the people. Erected on a hill "Gloriette" - a triumphal arch in honor of the victory over the Prussian Kaiser Frederick II (the battle in 1757 when Colin).

Construction of the palace, begun in 1696, was completed in 1713. During the reign of Maria Theresa, who loved and lived at Schonbrunn it with her husband, the emperor and 16 children, the building was rebuilt by architect Nikolaus Pakassi. When the troops of Naples occupied Vienna (in 1805 and 1809), at Schonbrunn was the headquarters of the Emperor. The palace had been born and died son of Napoleon, from his marriage to Marie Louise of Austria - King of Rome, pathetic loser eglonil ("Eaglet"), and Emperor Franz Joseph.
