Schönbrunn - the summer residence of the Habsburgs - also included in the mandatory number of your visits. Like Versailles, Peterhof and is - an ensemble that unites architecture and nature, where the park becomes an extension of the palace. His story begins in 1559, when Maximilian II bought a plot of land on which the mill was "Kattenburg", on his orders changed into a hunting lodge. "Schoenbrunn" - "excellent source", so named Matthias Kaiser. The hunting lodge was destroyed during the Turkish siege in 1683. In 1692 Emperor Leopold I decided to build for his son Joseph's summer residence, and received the task to his favorite architect Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, one of the most famous architects of the Baroque period, who made a significant contribution to the formation of the image of Vienna.

Fischer von Erlach has developed an ambitious project, set out to surpass Versailles. He wanted to build a palace on the hill, thus underlining the exceptional position of the monarch. From the palace had to go down stairs with ramps. Because of financial difficulties, this project has not been realized. Instead of ceremonial gatherings of a park, which is the completion of the palace - the Kaiser still had to get closer to the people. Erected on a hill "Gloriette" - a triumphal arch in honor of the victory over the Prussian Kaiser Frederick II (the battle in 1757 when Colin).

Construction of the palace, begun in 1696, was completed in 1713. During the reign of Maria Theresa, who loved and lived at Schonbrunn it with her husband, the emperor and 16 children, the building was rebuilt by architect Nikolaus Pakassi. When the troops of Naples occupied Vienna (in 1805 and 1809), at Schonbrunn was the headquarters of the Emperor. The palace had been born and died son of Napoleon, from his marriage to Marie Louise of Austria - King of Rome, pathetic loser eglonil ("Eaglet"), and Emperor Franz Joseph. The interior is worthy of attention - 1441 suite, partly accessible for inspection. In one of the most elegant buildings of the palace - Hall of Mirrors six Mozart played for Maria Theresa and her court.
