The Municipal Museum was founded in 1908, his exhibition was dedicated to St. Petersburg and Urban Affairs of everyday city life. The basis of his first collections were gifts presented to St. Petersburg for the 200th anniversary, which took place in 1903. In the future the museum's collection replenished through the exhibits coming from industrial and business exhibitions and from various city agencies.

The concept of the museum has changed several times, and under it changed its name. In 1932 it was renamed the Museum exhibition of the socialist reconstruction of the city, two years later he became known as the Museum Building and Urban Affairs. In the future the current State Museum of St. Petersburg has consistently turned into a museum of history and development of Leningrad, Museum of Architecture and the Leningrad State Museum of Leningrad.
