Arctic and Antarctic Museum was founded in November 1930, and seven years later opened to the public. The basis for the museum are the exhibits, which for several years, since 1923, exhibited at the "polar" exhibitions in Moscow and Leningrad. In 1958, Soviet scientists began to work in Antarctica, in connection with which the museum was open devoted to her exposure, and he was given its present name - the Museum of the Arctic and Antarctic.

St. Petersburg Museum of Arctic and Antarctic - the largest museum of its kind in the world and only in our country. His exposition on the history of the Earth's polar and their natural features. It is divided into four sections, devoted to the nature of the Arctic, Antarctic, the national economy and cultural development in the Far North, the history of research and development of the Northern Sea Route.

In the first part presents plants and animals that inhabit the Arctic. Here you can see a diorama of walruses Rookery, Bird Bazaar, Tundra in summer and winter, tundra, and others. In the center of the room layout is "Arctic" - relief map of the northern hemisphere globe.

The exhibition, devoted to Antarctica, illustrates the history of its discovery. Here you can learn about domestic and foreign Antarctic expeditions, as well as the nature of Antarctica. One section of the exhibition is devoted to the expedition Bellingshausen and Lazarev, as a result of which was the discovery of Antarctica. Here you can see the first edition of the Atlas of the journey of Captain Bellingshausen in the Southern Arctic Ocean and around the world in 1819-1821, respectively.

In 1911 and 1912 were carried out two expeditions to the South Pole - Norwegian-led Amundsen and the British, led by Scott. The Museum of Arctic and Antarctic can see the sleigh that was used during the expedition of Scott. They were handed over to the museum in the gift of Scott Polar Institute.

In the third section the museum of Arctic and Antarctic can see a collection of minerals mined in the far north. As well as exhibits illustrating the history and features the life of northern peoples. The latter include the distinctive ornament covered with household items and clothing from deerskin, embroidered with bright colored beads and inlaid with blue fox fur seals from the Nenets rugs, carvings, walrus and mammoth ivory production Uelen bone carving workshop and much more.

The last section is devoted to exposition of the history of Arctic navigation. Here you can see part of an ancient sailing ship, which sailed Pomors, the pioneers of the North Sea and the Arctic Ocean, typical of sailors XVI-XVII centuries clothing and much more. Here you can also read stories of the most important northern expeditions of XVIII - early XX centuries. The most interesting exhibits are located in this part of the museum - it's the wheel of the world's Arctic icebreaker "Ermak" real airplane "W-2", used for ice reconnaissance in the Arctic, the tent first floe drifting research station "North Pole" and much more.
