Cathedral (Domkyrka)

The main church of the Diocese of Lund Swedish Lutheran Church.

Cathedral was built in 1145 in the Romanesque style. In the construction used sandstone from the same material made sculptures and carved decoration.

The towers of the cathedral have a height of 55 meters.

The oldest church bell was made in 1513.

Admire the astronomical clock of the 14th century. They were stopped in 1837 but restarted in 1923.
Twice a day, the mechanism moves the wooden figures that act out a play. Six wooden figures representing the three Magi and their servants, pass in front of Mary and baby Jesus.
At the top of the hour - two knights.
Bottom panel clock - calendar. In the middle of the calendar is St. Lawrence, which is surrounded by symbols of the four Evangelists.

In the magnificent cathedral benches, which were intended for the canons of the ancient monastery of St. Lawrence.

Above the altar a triptych of the 15th century.

The altar, which is in the apse, decorated with a magnificent feast, the dating back to 1398 year.

In 1234 the church there was a strong fire. When restoring the building have been added to the wall, arches and west facade. Many valuable works of art additions have been made in the church during the Middle Ages.

In 1370-ies were built magnificent Gothic choirs, and in 1398 the Gothic wooden altar.

In 1510-ies of the German artist Adam Van Duren spent the renovation of the building. In the crypt, he created a monumental reliefs adorned with magnificent sarcophagus for the last archbishop Birger Lund Gunnarsena.

The ancient crypt in 1123. In the crypt there is a lot of coffins and gravestones. Among them are the most important is the sarcophagus of Archbishop Birger Gunnarsena created Adam van Düren in 1510's.

At the entrance doors of bronze relief, there are 24 images of biblical events, mainly the Old Testament times. Above the doorway at the front of the stone has the image of Jesus Christ, Knut IV, and St. Lawrence.

In the Lund Cathedral five organs. The largest organ - organ gallery, was built in the years 1932-1934, and the smallest is the astronomical clock.
