PALACE "Arktikum" 
Built in the town of Rovaniemi in 1992 by architects S.Birha, and K.Bonderupa E.Vaade. The main part of the premises is located underground, outside of the glass is only visible to the corridor length of 174 meters (often referred to as the "Gateway to the North"). As conceived by the architects, the building of the Palace symbolizes the harsh conditions of Lapland, where most of the year, all life is hidden under the ground, snow-covered. 
Total area - more than 10 square meters The building is located Arctic Centre (a research unit of the University of Lapland) and the provincial museum of Lapland. Arctic Centre studies and introduces visitors to the natural phenomena of the Arctic, the northern way of life, the history of Arctic exploration. Exhibitions of the Lapland Provincial Museum give an idea about the history of Lapland, from ancient times to the present day. The expositions are widely used advances in modern technology. Interest is computer light show "Northern Lights" held each hour at the theater, "Polarium" as close to the natural reproduction of arctic conditions. 
The museum Artikum can learn about the history and the present town of Rovaniemi, Finnish Lapland and its indigenous people - the Sami. In a Christmas shop can make a dwarf of the wood and fabric.His pleasure crafts to give to friends or to take home a souvenir of the visit to the museum Arktikum.In the library of the Arctic center can get more information about the Arctic and northern issues. 
The exhibition of the Arctic Research Center presents the history, lifestyle, living environment, as well as culture and traditions of the peoples living north of the Arctic Circle. 
The Finnish press has awarded in 1994 the Palace "Arktikum" prize "Best Finnish tourist attraction."In the same year the palace was awarded the European Council.
