Novgorod the Great
Novgorod the Great was in XI-XV centuries, the largest, richest and very peculiar town of North-Western Russia. The town stands on the banks of the Volkhov River near Lake Ilmen. His left side was called Sofia: it was the center of the Kremlin - Detinets (at first chopped, wood) to the cathedral of St. Sophia in the center. On the right. Trade was the prince's side (Yaroslav) yard here placed veche area and the city auction. The new walls of the Kremlin were built at a certain time on public funds and as directed by the archbishops, who are, in fact, the rulers of Veche Republic. With the accession to Moscow in Detinets began to dispose of the Grand Duke and people were building at the direction of the capital. So in the years 1484-1490 have updated the ramparts. At the beginning of the XVI century was surrounded by a wall with towers and external - Roundabout town (preserved only the White Tower), put on a defensive earthen rampart of the XII century. At the Belfry of the Kremlin is an observation deck, at its foot stands a grand bell weighing more than 2.5 tons, cast in 1659. On a pedestrian bridge connecting Sofia and Trade hand, you can feel the amazing effect - the bridge to vibrate under the bells. According to local legend, once this ringing startled horse Ivan the Terrible, set foot on the bridge, over which the king gave orders to cut off the ear of the bell.

Located near the excavation Detinets Trinity (Troitskaya street-break) allows everybody to see a strong cultural layer of the city, retaining almost one thousand birch-bark, and many other valuable evidence of the eventful life of the Middle Ages.
