Gamla Uppsala kyrka

Old Uppsala church

Built in the first half of the 12th century in 1164.

It was founded by Archbishop's Department and the temple became the center of the newly formed county of Uppsala. The chair moved here in the 13th century in Uppsala Cathedral.

This is where the stone altar, around which Pope John Paul II blesses the faithful during his visit to the Old Uppsala June 9, 1989.

In pagan times, this is where human sacrifices were carried out.

Nearby is a chain of mounds, which are buried the great King.
