Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow is one of the most popular sites visited by tourists. The State Tretyakov Gallery has grown from a small collection of paintings, which gained PM Tretyakov, who came from a respected merchant family, a great connoisseur of painting. Passion Tretyakov painting enabled him to gather at his home a rich collection of paintings by Russian and foreign artists, which together with the building Tretyakov donated to the city of Moscow in 1889.

The collection of Peter Mikhailovich Tretyakov paintings were Briullov Tropinin, Kramskoy, Repin, Vereshchagin, Dag, Monet, Pissarro, Manet and many other world famous artists (a collection of French painting was bequeathed gallery patron Mikhail Morozov). After the 1917 revolution the Tretyakov Gallery was nationalized and reorganized over time. Linens foreign artists moved into museums of Western art, the Tretyakov Gallery and turned into a museum of classical Russian art.

In the first weeks after the start of World War II, work began to evacuate Tretyakov Gallery, which made it possible to preserve intact the unique work of art. In the postwar years, lived an active life gallery. Traditionally a gift to the museum by various people were handed pictures of Benoit, Petrov-Vodkin, Roerich, Saryan, Savrasov, Wrobel as well as many other artists. Special place in the Tretyakov Gallery holds a meeting of ancient iconographic paintings.

Today the Tretyakov Gallery is located in the main building in Lavrushinsky Lane and in the museum building on the Crimean Val. The museum's collection has about 150 000 exhibits, including paintings by Aivazovsky, Borovikovsky, Kuindji Kustodiev Vasnetsov, Malevich, Kandinsky, Kras - this is just a small list of the most famous names. This includes and sculptural works, as well as graphics.
