Assumption Church. Rus-Voloska holy city

This building I remember from childhood, but first came to the city already in butnist student. And remember it with black and white album of architectural monuments of Western Ukraine. From there I just remember it. Whether the pictures were the best, whether in me woke up some confidence. Especially tower was struck.

After first visiting the city again, I best remember exactly Assumption Church. Other worse crashed into memory, although we tour the capital of Galicia (students geographers from Kyiv) conducted one of its best experts - Associate Professor of Lviv University (now is a professor), geographer John Kruglov. On all told, not shush the south. But I only vidklalosya Russ church (it was under this name it). And especially thanks to strong European bell (with me and now weakness to bell).

Assumption Church was built at the expense of the Lviv Dormition Brotherhood - Ukrainian Orthodox religious organization that was Stauropegial and subject to the Patriarchate of Antioch. The Brotherhood has been the last stronghold of Orthodoxy in Ukraine, so had to have his church. Construction began in 1591 it was burnt on the spot in 1571. Previous temple was built at the expense of the owner of the Orthodox Alexander Lepushnyanu Moldova, Moldova and in Ukraine at that time identified with Romania (Volohiyeyu, also Orthodox), and therefore became known as the church Hairs. Name and migrated to the new church, erected during the years 1591-1629 in Renaissance style by architect Paul Roman, Voytiha Kapinos and ambrosia favorably. But the church was not the first in the architectural ensemble. Even before it appeared bell tower and chapel.

Assumption Church bell tower was built in 1572-1578 was designed by Italian-Lviv architect Peter Barbon (given the style of Italian Renaissance architect quite clear). Funds allocated for the construction of a rich merchant of Lviv, a Greek by origin, Konstantin Kornyakt. Therefore, now more often called the belfry tower Kornyakta.

The funds of the same Kornyakta to set a huge bell tower bell, which had a diameter of 2 meters and was called "Cyril". It was the biggest bell in Galicia and one of the largest in Europe. Over time it became the main bell of the city. Interestingly, while the bell Ukrainian Orthodox Brotherhood was in the main, Ukrainian, even not allowed to craft workshops and self-governing bodies of the city.

In 1672 Tower Kornyakta suffered during the Turkish siege of the city, being in the center of a great fire. Rebuilt tower architect Peter Barbon in 1695, when it became almost modern look - was nadbudovano last tier and executed baroque with four obelisks at corners. Previously was a three-storey tower.

1772 Tower Kornyakta lost two tiers in a fire. They were rebuilt in the 1780s.

In the opinion of the Assumption Church bell tower is one of the most beautiful towers not only in Ukraine but also in Europe. Its height of 66 meters.

In 1578-1591 he was attached to the bell tower of the chapel of the Three Saints. Building architect was Peter Krasovskii. She became a synthesis of Renaissance styles and forms of traditional Galician folk architecture (and really like the wooden church).

After construction began on the chapel of the church, which lasted 38 years. Assumption Church became a major center of Orthodoxy in Ukraine. In 1631, she was consecrated Metropolitan of Kyiv Petro Mohyla. The architectural solution of the church became a repetition of Three Saints Chapel in the larger size. Renaissance style reflected in the planning and decoration, and Ukrainian folk - in the dome end.

In the 19th century was restoration, reconstruction, linking the aisle chapel and church. In addition, there were passages between the belfry and the church and bell tower and chapel. Thus three buildings turned into one, rather an entire complex, which regularly served as religious and spiritual center of Ukrainian in Lviv and Galicia.

After the First World War in Ukraine again faced the Polish government (of which there certainly was not for the Austrians, from the late 18th century). In the time between wars Assumption church was decorated with stained glass, and after the Second World was banned clapper. Giant "Cyril" was silent until 1989. Now Assumption Church is autocephalous Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
