Armenian Cathedral
Armenian Cathedral

In the 1360's large Armenian community in Ukraine began building his grand house. Silesian architect Doring designed a church modeled after a cathedral in Ani - the ancient Armenian capital on the territory of modern Turkey. The temple was built of stone and faced a whoop hewn slabs with walls reach five feet. Is the unique structure of the dome - it rests on hollow ribs of earthenware pots. The cathedral's interior portrays an authentic Oriental: Carved in stone images of stylized crosses Armenian sacrificial "khachkars" from the XIV-XV centuries, unique window murals on slopes, the oldest fragments of monumental painting in Lviv, newer decorative mosaics and wall paintings of the twentieth century in Art Nouveau style - all this creates a unique shape and colouration, rarely found anywhere else in the world.

An inimitable impression south yard located between the street and the cathedral: arcaded gallery gives XV century European architectural traditions. Here the remains of an ancient Armenian cemetery - gravestones, the oldest being 600 years old, moved here from other cemeteries Armenian churches and monasteries, which are several centuries in. But this cemetery is not typical: the courtyard of the house exactly paved with slabs are also built into the wall. З Upon entering the yard from the streets of Krakow, you will see the right and left of the entrance to the temple namohylni plates XVI-XVII centuries of well-preserved inscriptions. The church survived the wall of the epitaph vmurovana Armenian Patriarch Stephen V, who died in Lviv in 1551. His figure carved in relief on the full-length Lviv craftsman. Nahrobok is the oldest one of its kind.

Another highlight of the cathedral complex - carved wooden chapel in the courtyard of the XVIII century. The chapel contains an altar, depicting the Passion of Christ on Calvary. In the eastern courtyard of the temple stands a column of St. Christopher, erected in 1726, here is the former Palace of the Archbishops of Armenian and Armenian bank - the oldest pawnshop in the city. To the Armenian court could get through the ornate stone portal, which has been preserved in the arched entranceway, leads the bell tower. North of the court - Monastic because it borders the building of the monastery of Armenian Benedict XVII century.

January 7, 2001, the first time in post-totalitarian liturgy in the chapel of the church in the yard. In Lviv Armenian Cathedral of the Assumption June 25, 2001 praying Pope John Paul II. In May 2003, opened the doors of the streets of Krakow, but then there was a blessing Armenian Cathedral Supreme Patriarch of the Armenian Church, Catholicos of all Armenians Harehinom II.
