City Chersonese was founded ancient Greek colonists more than 2500 thousand years ago in southwestern Crimea. Its archaeological ruins - one of the greatest attractions of Sevastopol.

The surrounding countryside was populated by different tribes, peaceful and hostile, and in the Middle Ages, when the Chersonese became the Christian capital of the Crimean peninsula, it appears many monasteries and hermitages and cave towns. At the end of XIV century nomadic raids put an end to the city and its ruins were buried under earth.

 


In 1827 this place began excavations, which almost immediately brought Chersonese another name - "n Troy." The scope of research and a large number of archeological sites in need of conservation, led to the creation of the National Reserve "Chersonesos."

The town was mighty defensive walls, fences and rozplanovane the scheme, while common in the Greek and Roman world. To this day preserved many old buildings. Among them, the Hellenistic theater, Roman citadel, the medieval Christian churches, residential areas, streets, pottery shops, rybozasolovanne equipment, wells and others.



The area studied by archaeologists already 170 years. During this time, opened more than a third of the city. Among the archaeological finds are unique items - Oath of Chersonesos, decrees, frescoes, mosaics, slate icon of Christian temples, inscriptions, dedications, the numerous domestic items. General museum collection of the reserve is over 200 thousand exhibits.

 


Chersonese emerged late VI. BC and lasted until the beginning of the XV century. BC For two millennia, during the heyday of ancient Greece, Rome and Byzantium Chersonese was a significant center of culture on the Crimean peninsula. Chersonese also played a special role in relations between Byzantium and the Kievan Rus and was a leading center of Christianity in the East lands.



Chersonese and its agricultural county (choir) saturated with attractions that are unique authentic state survived until today only in the area and are the heritage of world civilization.

 

 

 

 

 


The complex of monuments which are part of the reserve "Chersonesos" not only has national significance, but also international. It includes:

- 5 archaeological complexes - Chersonese Taurian settlement, necropolis Chersonese in quarantine, Cembalo Fortress, Fortress Kalamita, ancient plots of land and estates;

- 11 architectural monuments on the territory of ancient settlement and fortress Kalamita.
