Gavle founded in 1486 on the shores of the Gulf of Bothnia, Baltic Sea, but it becomes a city official only in 1446.

The area of 41.75 square kilometers.

This is a major trading port, the administrative center of the district Estrikland and the ninth largest city in Sweden.

The town's name comes from Gävle Swedish word that means "river bed".

First mentioned in Gävle in 1413.

For many years the town consisted of small wooden buildings, built around the church, the palace of the governor and city council.

A sad chapter in the history of Gavle - several strong fires have occurred in the past 300 years, which eventually left the old town only a small area.
After a fire in 1776 the city was rebuilt - laid straight streets, which were built between the residential areas of rectangular shape.
In 1869 there was an even larger fire, which resulted in 8 out of 10 000 people lost their homes. The area south of the river Evlean survived and preserved to this day - now a district of Gamla, Gavle.

According to a new master plan of the city, wide streets were laid to alleys in the middle - the basic idea of this plan was to prevent large fires in the future.

In 1970 in the city of Gavle included several surrounding municipalities.

In 1995 the city hosted the World Championship.
